The first series of experimental soft tissue surgeries performed by a robotic surgeon using a laparoscopic method (through a small incision) without human guidance has been successfully completed. Four pigs were the experimental subjects of the robot-assisted surgery. One of the most challenging surgical tasks, the suturing of intestinal segments, was performed by the robot, significantly outperforming human surgeons.
The surgical robot was named STAR (Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot).
