According to Stephen Hawking, humanity will be extinct from the Earth within 1000 years, so we must leave it. He based this primarily on potential catastrophes, epidemics and overpopulation, but seeing the political and economic damage, he revised it to 100 years soon after.
We have little control over the impact of asteroids, but we say to the latter: why not eliminate the source of the trouble? But what is the source of trouble? The pervasive collusion of politicians and billionaires at the expense of ordinary people and the environment. This festering infection must be regulated and then we will not have to leave the planet. This is one of the main aspirations of meritocratic democracy and it is by its very nature apt to do so.
