Down-to-earthness

Not very often, but unfortunately we still run into just enough people who look at meritocracy with surprise or a contemptuous smile, as if the concept makes us aliens from the distant future. Or fugitives from the madhouse. These people are the greatest impediment to any effort to normalise the world. In other words, they are not just part of the problem, they are the problem.

These people - at best - see that there are problems in the world, but they feel it is futile if they cannot see beyond the point and consider new ideas because they are stuck with the concepts, terminologies and approaches of the past. It is very difficult to get them out of these, but they have very strong and, of course, arrogant opinions about things. In order to make a point, they are prone to ranting and name-calling.

This is an opportunity for them to make their annoyance or even their condescension useful, and not just leave a negative comment. It would be worth taking the opportunity to formulate the exact reason for their opposition: what disadvantages do they see in our idea? Have you found any logical flaws or pitfalls? Do you have a better idea? Be constructive and share your ideas or concerns. Point out the mistakes you have made, so that others can learn from them and we can correct our mistake if the criticism is justified.

Constructive criticism helps to polish and improve all concepts, including our own. However, responding to visceral reactions without arguments and analysis is very tiring.

It is up to the critic to show himself helpful or hostile.
