Imagine a situation in which a population used to comfort and urban services suddenly finds themselves in trouble and unable to cope. What might be the result if things get a bit more serious?
Mass starvation, even death by starvation. Chaos. Lynching for food.
What causes this?
Dependency. People buying food and necessities from a small number of multinational companies, unable to look after themselves because they do not have the knowledge, but the mentality is long gone as well. The companies are fattening up and the population can only hope that a meteor doesn't hit close enough to them to wipe out half the country. As a matter of fact, anything lesser than a meteor would take care of the population. Like a major epidemic or a huge snowfall, flood, earthquake. Nature can be very resourceful when it comes to picking on people.
Civilisation has its advantages, but there are always problems lurking. Let us not build a society that cannot cope with a crisis.
